Introductory Graffiti Workshop

We are excited to announce that the College of Liberal Arts at the University of MN selected NRRC to participate in the Hub Residency. We will host a series of workshops entitled “Where I’m From: Representing on the Northside” inviting Northsiders to document and process the current moment using seriously playful art and word-making. We anticipate hosting the first workshop September 12th at UROC (12:00PM-2:00PM). The project aims to provide opportunities for Northsiders of all ages to work in tandem with community and University artists and writers! Together, participants can create images and texts via cartooning and comics, collage, writing, doodling, and digital assemblage, all on the theme of representing one’s selves and one’s communities.

At our first Hub Residency Peyton Russell will lead us in an exercise is called: Sprallage, a method he developed to introduce spray paint and graffiti as a fine art.

We will meet at UROC at 12:00-2:00.  All ages are welcome and youth ages 13-18 who register at contactus@nrrc.org can receive a $50 Visa gift card.

Midwest Black Book Fair

Midwest Black Book Fair

Honoring stories of the resistance and uplifting intersectional narratives of Blackness.

The Midwest Black Book Fair is meant to honor their stories of the resistance and uplift the modern-day intersectional narratives of Blackness, Black history, and Black futurity. Held during Black August, the fair contributes to this month-long commemoration dedicated to honoring Black abolitionists, freedom fighters, and political prisoners. We are the stewards of these stories.

This family friendly event will feature Black book vendors, Black authors, book signings/readings, writing and publishing workshops, Black food vendors, and more!

Black Garnet Books is leading this initiative, partnering with local Black literary partners to advise on event production including: Strive Publishing & Bookstore, Babycake's Book Stack, In Black Ink, Griot Arts, The Givens Collection, More Than a Single Story, Saint Paul Almanac, Planting People Growing Justice, and Mind's Eye Comics, Wise Ink, Picture Book Parade, Uhuru Bookstore, The Minnesota Black Authors Expo, and the Network for the Development of Children of African Descent.
